Il seminario dal titolo:
Electroporation based technologies and treatments è organizzato dal DIEII. Descrizione dell'evento:

AVVISO DI SEMINARIO
DAMIJAN MIKLAVČIČ

University of Ljubljana

17 Maggio 2012 Aula 21 ore 8:30 – 11:30
18 Maggio 2012 Aula 21 ore 10:00 – 13:00

Electroporation based technologies and treatments

The lectures will be organized in order to explain the electroporation as the basis of electrochemotherapy, after that the use of the finite element method for in vivo understanding of electroporation will be presented. In particular the coupled modeling (current density and temperature) in a multiphysic problem will be presented in order to show how the conductivity changes of the tissue can be adopted into electric field calculations. Finally a tumor treatment planning will be addressed. Expected result will be first of all the student exchange between University of Ljubljana and University of Salerno. Moreover the lessons lead to introduce new concept and methodology to PhD students of Electrical, Electronic and Chemical Engineering at University of Salerno.

Damijan Miklavčič: is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana since 2002. He is the Head of the Laboratory of Biocybernetics since 1998 and the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering since 2007. Damijan Miklavčič was born in Ljubljana in 1963, has completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1987, M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1991 and defended his Ph.D. in 1993 - all at the University of Ljubljana. After his Ph.D. he became reasearch associate at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University in Ljubljana. In 1995 and 1996 he was a visiting researcher at the Institute Gustave Roussy ,Villejuif, France in the group of dr. Lluis M. Mir. After his return to Slovenia he assumed position of Associate Professor and was elected full Professor in 2002. In years 2003 to 2005 he served as vice-dean for research. His interest in research started already as undergraduate student working under the mentorship of Professor Stanislav Reberšek and later Professor Lojze Vodovnik. His first research was related to development of medical instrumentation and developing measurement methods used in rehabilitation. For this work he received students award from University of Ljubljana in 1996. Soon he became interested in possible role and use of electrical currents and electromagnetic fields in treatment of cancer. His Ph.D. thesis was co-menthored by professor Gregor Serša, a professor and researcher at the Institute of Oncology, Ljubljana with whom Damijan Miklavčič is actively collaborating ever since. Damijan Miklavčič has devoted last twenty years in the development of electrochemotherapy – a combination of short high voltage electric pulses in combination with some chemotherapeutic drugs. He was involved in basic research on the level of cells in vitro, in vivo and supporting introduction of electrochemotherapy into clinical environment. In addition to research into basic mechanism of electroporation (the name used most commonly to describe the phenomenon), he was leading the development of medical device for electrochemotherapy, electrodes and models of tissue and cell electroporation. Electrochemotherapy is now used in almost 100 clinical centres around Europe and is paving its way to wider recognition as efficient local treatment for solid tumors irrespective of histological origin. The use of electrochemotherapy since 2006 when clinical device and standard operating procedurees have been released as a result of two consecutive EU funded projects (Cliniporator and ESOPE – both coordinated by dr. Lluis Mir) the number of patients treated by electrochemotherapy is increasing. In year 2011 alone more than 2000 patients were treated. Professor Damijan Miklavcic has published more than 200 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals which received more than 2000 citations. His contribution was recognised by Slovenian government by awarding him the highest award for scientific and research achievements which he received with dr. Gregor Serša and dr. Lojze Vodovnik in 1995, and by awarding him award »Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia« in 2003. In 2008 he also received the Order of Academic Palms of the French Republic for his research and collaborative efforts with french partners.

Il seminario è aperto a tutti gli interessati.
